Should Tipping be Abolished in North America?

What is it?

In today’s culture and society I believe that tipping in most parts of the world is expected.  Looking exactly into what tipping is, it is an amount of money given by a client or customer to a server/ worker in addition to the price given on the menu/ brochure. Tipping is mostly given to certain workers/ servers for excellent service or a job well done. As tipping is not mandatory, it is a nice gesture towards the workers (Cambridge University, 2018, para. 2.)

Why you Should

I believe giving a tip to a worker/ servers is important because the waiters and waitresses work for their money. They are getting paid less then minimum wage because they also get tips on top of what they already make (if people actually tip). If the workers/ servers aren’t doing their job properly or nicely it will show in their pay and in the end they will be the ones who lose out. Some ways I think to get a better tip are; being the opposite gender of your customers, introducing yourself by name, and give the customer candy when you bring the check. Servers in America and Canada rely on tipping to make a living and if you do not tip them, they think that you are “rude”.

Why You Shouldn’t

Some other facts that I have also been thinking about is that it all depend on your; age, gender, race,  nationality, sexual orientation, religion, profession. This can affected how people tip workers/servers. Some things that I have come to realize about tipping from a server’s perspective, is that it; shortchanges servers, inconvenience customers, and sometimes can even make the dinning experiences worst for everyone. They make it out to be like it is the customers job to pay the servers/ workers the extra money that they are losing out on because, the company won’t pay their employees the proper minimum wage every other worker is getting, but instead they are getting “server wages”. From most of our history paying employees for better service was an undemocratic form of bribery. The stress that most customers get when they get the bill of not knowing what percentage they should tip can be embarrassing and most people don’t want to be put on the spot like that.

In conclusion I believe not every culture practices tipping, but most do in Canada and USA. I think it is a nice gesture for people who work really hard and deserve it.  Either side that I have talked about today have reasons to tip or not to tip, it is personal preference and you shouldn’t tip if you don’t feel comfortable or think that the worker/ server deserves it.
